Recently on my Bolens H16XL the starter does not operate. I turn the ignition key and get nothing but a click. I connected the tractor battery to ny car battery with jumpers still nothing but a click when I turned the key. What do you think it might be and how can I check it. Thank you.

Does it just click once when the key is turned to the start position? If so, it sounds like your safety switches are alright and your solenoid is firing like it's supposed to so I would suspect the starter.
Does it have multiple clicks? This usually points to a loose connection or a low battery.
Does the click have a pinging sound to it? Check to make sure the pto switch is in the off position.
These are the first things I always check for. I hope it helps you out.

Check your safety interlock switches---under the seat ----under the brake-- and make sure you have not inadvertently left the mower clutch switch on. Otherwise you may have a bad starter which involves pulling the engine to access.

Bill,

I have a Bolens QT-16 that used to do this. It would randomly happen every once and a while. It turns out that my starter was getting weak and it would sometimes get stuck and not rewind itself. I would use a screw driver to stick in and turn my flywheel a little bit so that the starter could recoil.

This went on for nearly three years and then the starter died completely, so this winter I replaced the starter with a new one and it operates perfectly again.

Hope this helps!

Hans
