My GT is a JD 314 with the 14hp Kohler.. going to adding a bigger deck.. and doing a few things to the engine for a few more HP.. but dont want to toast the engine in the Hot Texas Sun this summer.. would like to add the gauge now before we change anything to know where to start... Anyone know were to get a gauge... and how... where to hook it up... EGT gauge??? thanks

thanks for the input guys... don't know why the VW and aircraft engines didn't cross my mind.. but I didn't know anything about the sensor for under the head bolts... thanks

There are cylinder head temp and oii temp gauges made for air-cooled VWs that would work. They readily available, inexpensive and pretty easy to install.

Go to the airport and talk to an aircraft mech. about CHT (Cyl head temp.) guage.

kohler and wisconsin supply an engine shutoff that mounts under a head bolt and you run a jumper wire from your points to it.when the engine starts to overheat the switch shorts out the ignition and stops the engine.lucas

I would put a temperature probe in the oil sump and see how hot the oil is getting. That is the only fluid you can measure for this engine. I am not a mechanical engineer but I would say the oil shouldn't go over probably 180 at the most but I would like to see it stay around 140 myself. Your engine will tell you when it is too hot cause it will shut down and/or blow a head gasket. I know before I rebuilt my kohler 10hp, it would shut down cause it was low on oil and would get hot. The only other way to measure some kind of temp is to use thermocouples and measure different places on the cooling fins. You have brought up a good discussion and hopefully I can learn more myself.

I don't know about a Kohler, but all the oil temp readings i have dealt with have said to keep the oil OVER 180 and under 210 degrees. The over 180 is to get rid of the sludge and condensation, and under 210 because every 10 degrees over 200 your oil will half in lubrication.

To the origional poster. There use to be a head temp guage you could get. The sending unit took readings by going over the threads of the spark plug, and touching the head when the plug was tightened down.

"If" i wanted to keep tabs on the temp., it would be with a "exaust temp." guage. That's the fastest reacting temp to keep track of!!

Used one of the underplug head temp gauges on my ole XT600 dirt bike, worked well. These and similar exhaust temp gauges are available thru Dennis Kirk,a ATV/Bike/Snowmobile specialist.Sire is a bit hard to navigate..look under engines, then gauges.

Head temp gauges are real common on snowmobiles. I have a friend who had a '74ish Arctic Cat Cheetah that had dual head temp gauges. Very slick. Wish I'd had them the night I burned down my '72 SkiDoo single... If I were keeping that sled I'd put a head temp sensor on it.
