Hello all, I have been trying to breath life into a 1978 401417 Briggs & Stratton 401417 16hp opposed twin engine. I have gotten the starter circuit running and the engine seams to spin very easy but nothing after that. The wiring on this engine is a mess. I have found an engine diagram from briggs but no wiring info. I think the engine is supposed to have points, I can't locate any however there is a condesenor laying on top of the engine. If looking at the front of the engine there are two black wires coming from the stator on the left and one on the right coming from a small torid transformer, I think this goes to the missing points, don't know. Does anyone out there have a wiring diagram for this beast or can give me any input on how to wire it?

Thanks in advance for your help,
Roon

Roon, I haven't been on the sight for a couple days but I will try to get rest of info to you tomorrow. The magnitron ignition just replaces the coil you take off and you don't even have to pull the flywheel off. The instruction say to clip off the wire for the points(the wire that goes from coil to the underside of flywheel) and it shows you how to hook to the key switch wire on the block by the carb.

Thanks Wally, I am presently trying to find the correct electronic ignition kit. There seems to be some confusion about which kit I need. Originally, I was looking for a Briggs Part #394891, but due to the age of my engine, 1978, a guy told me I needed a different part he is researching. I will let you know what I find out. I will keep in touch and keep you posted. What is your direct email?

Thanks,
Roon

Don't worry about the points, check the magneto under the flywheel housing and see if it is a Magnatron solid state unit. If it's not, go buy a new one and you won't have to deal with points and condensors anymore. I'll check the wires on my tractor and get back to you which way they go.

Wally, THANKS for the feedback. You are the second guy to suggest that, so I think I will heed your advice. Is there any place special I have to buy one or should I be able to get one from the local Briggs shop. Also, I assume that I will have to pull the large stator with the magnets off of the front of the engine, was looking at that tonight. How do I pull this off? On the front it says do not pry, I am assuming a large gear puller? But isn't that prying? Are there any bolts or set screws? Also if I go to the electronic ignition, will I have to replace the yellow coil on the right, as you are looking at the front of the engine, that the spark plug wires come out of?

I know this is a lot of questions but I seem to be short on resources for answers.

Thanks a million for your help,
Roon
