Bought a 1720 cub cadet for $325 at auction. 17 hp koler magnum runs great. It has two problems first the amp gauge doesn't show charging and it apears it doesn't I had to jump start and after it ran for 30 minutes it wouln't start by itself. What is the charging system on these whats most common problem? Second Hydro drive works forward but will not go in reverse. I reconnected wires to limit switches on hydro lever and it went into reverse but still would not back-up. one of the wires on limt switch was cut haven repaired. Any guess to problem. It has a 48 deck but deck is bent at front I guess it can be heated and straghten everything else works on deck.

should I part out the tractor and try to recoup my money?

As far as charging goes. The electric pto uses enough while running to allow only a little current to go to battery. Have you tried slow charging the battery on a charger? This always works on my 1720. Second the linkage is adjustable at the rear of the tractor underneath is a lever on the transaxle. If the nuts are too far forward it will only go forward. Turn towards back of tractor and see if that helps. I only have about 3/4" of thread left on linkage rod when adjusted properly. I don't know whether the pto uses more current as it gets older or the type of cutting (heavy) increases the current draw, but the charging system (which is off the electronic coil) doesn't seem to always keep up. I've replaced the coil and that did nothing to help so don't go that route. I usually keep a slow charger on mine when not in use. The other thing is leaving the pto in the on position when not running or a short. Both can cause a dead battery in no time.
