12 hp Kohler in a Old Toro Wheel Horse..
Runs and stops..worse on real hot days when working it..
Runs great..then starts to backfire (pops)..and slow down until finally stops.. usually will restart in just a few minutes...then repeats after a few minutes of running. I have replaced the following:
points, plug, fuel filter, coil, ...starting to think it might be a sticky valve..
Anyone with any suggestions ...and how do I check for sticky valve? Any way to free a sticky valve without tear down/??
ps i got this tractor from a neighbour who left it outside summer and winter ..he had same problem had it to dealer several times without any luck..just another reason I think it could be a sticky valve...

I have a C-120 Wheelhorse tractor 12hp ( 20 or 25 years old). I am having the same problems. When it get hot, it will cut-off or stop! After cutting, it will backfire(pop). I am thinking about having it rebuilt. Do you think, this would help. ed

did you get it running or not? did you try the coil and i don't see it could be anything else,if it runs good until it gets hot .

have you tried to change the coil, sometimes when a motor gets hot a bad coil will quit firing, if you have points and condenser I would suggest that you change to electronic module.

I agree with wboston. What you describe is a symptom of a bad condensor. Did you replace it with the point's? If not I would before you start worrying about the valves. A bad condensor will fail as it heats up, it cools a bit and starts to work again, heats up and fails again. etc. I always replace the points and condensor as a set.

You can send it to me! You could try some od the chemicals that are supposed to free up valves but I think from the sound of it you may just need to adjust them.

In Minnesota

take the breather plate off and there is where the ajustments are made. I have to get my book back from my brother in law for the specks on the clearances.

see if it does it with the gas cap loose, it may be developing a vacume in the tank causing fuel starving.
