Case 220 transmission...?

I have a question concerning the Case 220 garden tractor's hydraulic transmission. I have owned this tractor since it was new. It has always operated this way and I just accepted it as it was. Last weekend I was looking at a "basket case" Deere 400 at a local Ariens dealer and I mentioned the problem with the Case 220. He said that the tractor wasn't supposed to work like this and suggested that the problem might be a sticky valve.
The problem is: when I engage the "retard" setting on the drive control, the tractor operates as it should. If I'm working on a hill and I happen to bump the lever and the setting moves from "retard" into the normal drive range, all hell breaks loose. The transmission and rear end start to howling and the tractor usually doesn't get stopped until we are both sitting at the bottom of a hill in the creek.
I don't mind too much but my wife and kid don't care for this kind of adventure on a regular basis.
Anybody have any experience with this sort of problem? If it's just a valve I'd like to get the thing fixed. If it is really more the nature of the beast, I guess I'm going to trade it on another Hydrostat Deere. Any comments would be appreciated.

My 1977 446 does the same thing. Later models included a "Holding Valve" which is available from your local Ingersoll dealer. Pricey though, around $275! We are not alone so post any tricks or inexpensive remedies that float your way.
