Sears Tractor leaving grass standing

I recently purchased a '78 model Sears Garden Tractor with a Onan engine. I've got it running good, but it leaves two columns of grass standing that I have to go back and recut. The deck is in very good condition, bearings are tight, blades were sharpened, and I put a new belt in the deck and a new deck drive belt, also.

It runs like a top, but doesn't cut very well, regardless of deck height setting. Anyone have any ideas?

Also, apparently neither the hydrostatic transmission oil nor its filter has ever been changed. Should I or shouldn't I change them? If I change them where can I find a filter and what kind of oil should I use?

Thanks,

AL

I am having similar problems although the deck is adjusted the correct way. If you look under the deck the two blades where they meet there is about a 1/2 inch gap bettween them and Iam assuming that is why there is a line of grass uncut right in the middle, Iam mounting a 3 blade deck under it now Not sure if it will help although the blades are much closer together Tom

The most probable cause is mowing a too high a ground speed. Try mowing at a slower speed.

The front of the deck should be 1/2 inch LOWER than the back; to allow the clippings time to recirculate and get recut before dropping out.

I assume you have twin blades. Does it leave a strip in the center and also one side-always the same side. If so probably one blade is bent up on the ends from hitting an obstruction (such as an Arizona rock). I have had this happen numerous times. The blades are too tough to try to straighten-just as well invest in some new ones.

Thanks for all the comments. The blades are old, i'll buy some new ones. It could be the front tires laying the grass down, but it looks like the grass just isn't being cut. The deck is suspended from the tractor - no wheels. The front is about 1/2" lower than the rear.

Thanks again.

The FRONTt of the deck should be about 1/2 inch higher than the rear of the deck. See if there is any way to adjust this. Also I would get new blades, a bent blade can cause problems like you are having.

Al, Are the 2 columns of grass left uncut from the front tires laying the grass down? Philip.

Any time you get a tractor you should automatically change the fluids as a matter of course.

How new are the blades? If the tips are rounded off from years of sharpening, its probably time for a new set.

MAKE SURE DECK HAS THE RIGHT LENGTH BLADES,MAYBE THEY ARE TOO SHORT LEAVING WIDE GAPS BETWEEN BLADES,AS FAR AS OIL AND FILTER,TRY YOUR LOCAL NAPA STORE IF YOU HAVE ONE..... ..... ..... ..

Check deck levels,in cutting position deck front should be slightly lower than rear.normally 1/4-1/2 inch. There are 2 kinds of mower decks, rolling and suspended.Rolling deck is designed to roll on its wheels/rollers front and rear and simply be towed along by tractor,Suspended deck usually has only rear wheels and should hang from tractor with wheels slightly above ground in cutting position.Wheels only exist for anti=scalping on suspended deck and should only contact ground on uneven ground to guide deck over bumps etc.

Sold my Easy Mulch 3 deck, 48", off of my Sears Lawn tractor not to long ago. It just gave a very poor cut, despite adjusting it several times, and being new. The deck new sells for five hundred dollars, and the most I got after very little use was $150. I use the tractor now for a tow behind spreader, and cut my grass with an exmark metro with 48" cut, with excellent results. From my experience, my deck was poorly designed. Hope you fix yours.
