Front pto will turn on at times, then run for awhile then it just cuts off and will not turn on until it sets for awhile. It seems to be getting worse. Have replaced the pto switch and checked the wires and the saftey switch under the seat. Does the black box by the steering shaft have any thing to do with this problem? Any advice are thoughts will be welcomed.
Thanks in advance.
RW

The next time the clutch quits, find the blue wire that goes to the clutch coil. It runs along the RH side under the engine and has a connector. Unplug it and check if there is current there. If you have good voltage at that wire, but the clutch will not engage when the wires plugged back in, the clutch coil is bad.

RW - PTO clutch problems can be tricky to figure out. Al m suggested the air gap might be the problem. However, the proper gap setting is 0.018". But usually if the air gap is the problem, once engaged, the clutch does not cut out. If you are having a problem with the clutch cutting out while mowing, chances are the coil of the clutch is shorting out. - Dave

check the "air gap".the sping loaded nuts are used to adjust. It is measured through the 4 slots in the sheet metal flange using feeler gauges and should be about .010.This is from memory so checking a manual is a good idea.
