Bought used, doesn't run. Has been in shop for three weeks. Mechanic says someone messed with the alternator and opened the diode. He doesn't know which way it goes, and has been waiting for Kohler to get back to him with the schematic. Anybody have one? The grass is about chin-deep now...Thanks!

John: It is very hard to get information unless you have the engine model number or tractor model number. Since this is a Sears product, go to Link In the search block type in your Craftman Lawn Tractor number. You then can go to owner's manual, part's manual, or electrical diagrams. I can give you some help if you have a tester. You clamp onto the wire before the diode and after the diode with your motor running, you should get a reading from 4 amps or whatever your alternator puts out. When you buy these diodes from Sears, they have special connections for certain alternators (ac or dc). Usually ac is for lights. When you get your wiring diagram from the website, it will show you which alternator you have and what connections you should have, and even how to install them. Save this website as your favorite. You can always go back and get more information on your tractor. I usually print out a couple copies on my printer and take it to the tractor I am working on. This is what they should be doing, but I think you will probably be able to do a better job yourself once you collect this information from the website. Good luck. E-mail me if you need additional help.

More info-I can't remember if the engine is a 15 or 15.5 (it has been so long since I've seen it!). The mechanic did mention "Kohler Commander."

I'M CONFUSED. I'VE NEVER HEARD OF SOMEONE OPENING A DIODE. ALSO, WHAT DOES A DIODE HAVE TO DO WITH WHETHER YOUR TRACTOR RUNS OR NOT. IS THE BATTERY DEAD, WON'T CRANK & SO WON'T START? GO TO SEARS PARTS ONLINE, THEY SHOULD HAVE A MANUAL FOR YOUR TRACTOR WHICH WILL HAVE A WIRING DIAGRAM IN IT. I DON'T THINK A WIRING DIAGRAM IS GOING TO HELP MUCH THOUGH, BECAUSE IF YOU DO HAVE A DIODE IN THE CHARGING SYSTEM A WIRING DIAGRAM IS NOT GOING TO TELL YOU WHICH WAY TO INSTALL IT. IF YOUR SYSTEM HAS A DIODE AND SOMEONE CUT IT OUT OF THE SYSTEM YOU PROBABLY NEED A NEW STATER. MOST 15 HP KOHLER COMMAND ENGINES HAVE A VOLTAGE REGULATOR/RECTIFIER INSTEAD OF A DIODE. THE REG/REC IS A FLAT OBJECT ABOUT 2" X 4" BOLTED ON THE SIDE OF THE ENGINE HOUSING WITH 2 BOLTS, ONE IN EACH END. IF SO, YOU SHOULD HAVE 2 BLACK WIRES COMING OUT OF THE ENGINE GOING TO THE 3 WIRE CONNECTOR ON THE REG/REC. THE BLACK WIRES SHOULD BE IN THE OUTSIDE HOLES, THESE ARE THE AC VOLTAGE FROM THE STATER. THE CENTER WIRE IS WHITE AND IT CONNECTS TO THE POSITVE SIDE OF THE BATTERY,PROBABLY THROUGH THE IGNITION SWITCH.
