I can't keep grease in the right angle gear box on the 48" mower deck. It comes out around the input shaft seal. I've replaced the shaft and the seal twice but it still comes out. I have to refill every 3 hours. Do you think the gear box should be vented? Has anyone else had this problem?

I had a NH-14 with a similar gearbox. As I recall, Proper lubricant is important but just as important is not overfilling the gearbox. Should only be filled to jost below the level of the input shaft. Remember that you are trying to lubricate the gears within the gearbox and to a lessor extent the bearings. This brings us to the second issue. The carrier bearings on the shaft may be worn allowing the shaft to move or wobble and causing premature wear on the input shaft and shaft seal.

There should be a vent some where on it. Any gear box builds heat and has to release expanded air. A lot of equipment like that has a vent that is just a hole drilled in it somewhere.

My operators manual for Ariens 48" deck says: The lubricant level should be to the center line of the input shaft, if level is not correct, fill gearbox to proper level. Use Ariens No. 000150 Moly-Purpose Grease. If you are using a heavy oil the seals may not be able to hold it. I bought my mower used and the former owner drilled a hole in the lid and fitted it with a grease zert. In bold print the book says to use only 000150 Moly-Purpose Grease. Good Luck.

That should read 000150 Moly Multi-Purpose Grease.

I've been using lithium based multi purpuse grease. Do you think this could be the problem? There is no Ariens dealer in my area anymore so it's hard to get parts and use thier recommended lubricants.
