A freind of mine once owned a Ariens lawn tractor.
He had over $700 worth in parts and labor on the motor and such. After it was fixed, he brought it home and started cutting grass. after cutting for a while the tractor would backfire, I mean REALLY backfire. it popped once but it was like you put a shotgun to your hear, then it stopped. He would crank and crank and crank on it but it would not start. After he changed the spark plug it fired right up and ran like it was new, until it did it again. one LOUD bang and it stopped. It would not start until you replaced the spark plug again. The problem was never corrected. somtimes he could cut for days before it popped, while other times he barely got out of the driveway. everything was checked and rechecked numerous times. He does not have the tractor any more, but my curiousity is getting the best of me. I would like to know what you guys think could have possibly made it do this???

Burned exhaust valve caused the backfire which in turn damaged the plug, most likely knocking the ground electrode either off entirely or collapsing it into the center electrode.
