lawn mower with a single blade?? My mother is looking for a new rider but wants a small one...@30" would do. I haven't had very good luck w/rear engine riders in the past and she doesn't like the way a twin blade mows. Seems like they all streak in the middle in tall stuff. Any comments appreciated. Thanks, Fred

I had a 27 or 30 in. (dis-remember, now) Lawnboy 5hp rear-engine rider (an early one with an open frame and footboards ala Allis 'G') back in the 70's when I was living in Illinois. The softball field needed mowing for the start of the season and they called for volunteers...I showed up with the little L-B and a neighbor came with with a new J-D equipped with a mower deck about 40 some inches wide...3 blades, side discharge. The grass was about 6 to 8 inches tall and still wet from the rain the day before...L-B was in low gear. A story of the "tortoise and the hare"....the neighbor would pass me...stop to clear his deck and I would motor by...Beep, beep! This repeated until we were 3/4 done and then he just 'parked it'...letting me and the L-B finish the job. I wish I had kept the L-B....it had super-visibilty with the open-frame design and the single blade never plugged up or left uncut strips...oh, well! Maybe I'll find another one some day! :-)

Ariens and Toro might have something too, but they are rear engine riders, There is a swisher mower with the front engine, 30" deck I believe, but its on a tri-cycle type frame, 2 rear wheels, 1 large front wheel.

Good Luck,
Jim

Used to be very common to see up to 30" single blade decks, however they all seemed to disappear about the time the "safety nazis" declared war on lawnmowers.Same with large deck(23+")push mowers.Believe the blade "tip speed"regulation and related rules took them out.As Ben said a Snapper,or possibly an Ariens would be the logical place to look.Believe Snapper still offered a 26 or 28 single blade a couple yrs back.
