15HP Kohler Command CV15S Fuel Problem

Yesterday while mowing, I shut the engine off on my lawn tractor, and it would not restart. I traced the problem to the fuel system - when I pour a little gas in the carb, it will start right up and run for a few seconds and die. The carb is getting fuel (when I disconnect the fuel line, gas flows freely), and when I take the carb off the block, gas runs out of it when tipped over, so the float bowl has some fuel in it. The engine went from running perfectly to not starting. Any ideas? Thanks!

Did you ever resolve this? I'm having exactly the same symptoms with my tractor ... same engine. I've disassembled the carb and there's gas in the bowl ... I can't detect any plugged jets, etc. Wondering if the solenoid ended up being the issue for you?

If this has the fuel shutoff solonoid on the bottom of carb, check wiring and solonoid.

I assume the fuel shutoff solenoid is the thing at the bottom of the carb float. What is the best way to check this? I am assuming that it needs 12V with the ignition on, but how do you know if the solenoid is actually opening? I there a way to check the electrical resistance?

Thanks!

You should feel that solenoid click when it works. Its a soft click.

You can remove it, and touch the side of it to a good ground, and power the wire, and the little plunger in it should be sucked down by the little magnetic field it creates.

Usually you can hear a soft click, and you might even hear it.

If you choose to remove it and test it, you will have to push the plunger in alittle with your finger first. The solenoid will then pull it in the rest of the way. When its installed in the carb, the plunger is pushed part way into the solenoid. Be careful if you test it this way. Electricity+a spark+gasoline etc. I have seen very few solenoids fail but I have seen alot of main jets plug up.

Plugged jet or passage. Disassimble the carb and clean it out. Use a can of carb cleaner with the little tube that comes with it to blow all passages out. Drain your gas tank and clean it and put in fresh CLEAN gas. Install/replace a fuel filter in line if it doesn't have one.
