I've got a bad starter on a 19.5 h.p. B&S I/C craftsman mower, model # 917 259573. I've bit the bullet and bought new (last time I tried to fix a starter it cost me more than new (big grin)).

I've got all of the junk off the engine, having problems breaking loose the flywheel nut. I haven't really torked(sp?) down on it for fear of breakage, and Im not sure if its left or right hand threads.

Any tips/tricks/things that work??

Thanks in advance for your time. I do appreciate it.

Regards.....don t. .....

Prying with screwdriver not really a good idea!!! Can possibably bend crankshaft that way. I would recommend using a puller and apply reasonable pressure and then rap puller shaft sharply. The shock usually "pops" them loose. I have also applied some heat to the flywheel area with a hand held propane torch. Not to much though. A little heat does wonders a lot of times.

The nut is standard right hand threads. If you don't have access to an impact/compressor, you can use a strap wrench to hold the flywheel while loosening the nut (this is the method suggested in B&S service manual anyway). Is this a B&S twin cylinder opposed engine ? If so the starter can be removed with an end wrench without removing the flywheel. The nut on the flywheel is torqued to 150 foot pounds.

put a half inch impact and socket on the nut,,put the impact in reverse and wing it off of there. then use a puller on the flywheel.
