Hi: Just replaced clutch, throwout bearing, arm etc in 3 speed model 1200 Cub Cadet...this went OK but noticed I still had bad vibration/noise in drive shaft assy (would stop when you put clutch in and out sometimes). It appears drive shaft is loose up front by pilot bearing. Removed the shaft assy. There were some small "shavings" in pilot bearing area. I "think" the bushing and/or pilot assy are bad. My service manual doesn't seem to cover this. The parts book I have shows a lube bushing and pilot hub assy. Can I repair this while its in the tractor? Do I need a puller or special tools to remove the old bearing? It is a Kohler 12 HP motor.. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated....

I take it you have the late model 1200. You can change the pilot bearing and the steel plate that hols it without pulling the engine. Slip the driveshaft out and unbolt the four bolts that hold the bearing to the flywheel. You better make sure the rubber motor mounts are good. They will make the engine go out of line and vibrate and break the clutch drive plate.

Thanks Wally....I feel like a real "rube". I stopped short of taking off the four bolts when I posted the query. Have replaced the bushing and have it back together. It seems to have corrected it but only drove up and down the driveway a few times as it is raining again..appreciate your advice..... .
