I have a white with a horizontal 16 hp engine.
It started blowing oil out the vent on the top. We put new rings in and set them at 90 degrees from each other. That did not work.
Does anyone have any sugestions on what to check/fix to stop this.

It may be totally unrelated to the rings. In some briggs engines the breather that covers the valve assy has a fiber valve/disk and spring in it to ventilate the crankcase and direct the crankcase gases to the air filter entry. If these do not function correctly or the fiber disk is bad, it will blow oil into the air cleaner and lots of it. The engine breaths the oil through the carb and burns it.

Most of the time you don't want to hone it because the rings seat too fast and it wears the block out. Then you need over-sized rings. This might be your problem.

is this a twin 16 hp. I have a twin 180degrees opposed. We rebuilt the motor and the oil started comming out of the breather on one side. We determined that with this motor there are two breathers and ont the new twins there is only one. so we blocked one, and it works great.

if you are burning oil and it is comming through the exhaust, you should try to remember if the oil scraper was in good condition if you mounted the rings in the correct orientation. Meaning they can be mounted upside down, because there is a chamfer on one side of the rings and the other is straight. Also was the gap correct.

The next area to check would be the valve seats. You might be pulling the oil through the intake valve guide seal.

We just rebuilt a 16 hp single for my brothers simplicity, it blew oil so bad it would repel mosquitos. His problem was the ring gap, someone had rebuilt the motor and had over a eighth inch gap. We put in new rings and she runs great.

long message hope somthing helps.

Dave

Did you hone the cylinder to the correct size and pattern?
