Hey fellows, I've been a gear-gal since I was little, I recently revived a neighbor's old Ward's mower (see subject line) but when I shift to any gear (1-5) it remains at the same speed (feels like first gear, slow). This is a transaxle, and I'm guessing the VS is not working right, but I've never messed with one before. Help a lady, what do I need to do?? Thanks!

Mia,
You can try to put selector in highest gear, with the engine running, release clutch and then pull clutch back with your foot. Once clutch is all the way out, push clutch in quickly. If it doesn't loosen up, check the VS pulley adjuster for ease of movement with the clutch all the way in. Chances are that the center slide doesn't slide up and down and is seized. You must remove entire pulley and free it up. Carefull you do not loose the roller bearings.
Good luck.
