HI again, you guys have helped me tremondously in reviving this engine. So far everything is going well except it doesn't know how to run on its own. With the assistance of Starting fluid, it tries to run. The fuel is getting into the bowl below the carb, but no success after that. Any suggestions????

As mentioned, it's an old Briggs 11hp engine 399cc and probably 20-25 years old

i pulled out of your message that you replaced the carb?was the carb that was on it the original?take the new carb and the old carb where they bolt up to the engine take a look at the opening on both carbs it should be the size of a half dollar opening in the new one its much likley the size of a quarter opening not letting enough suction through starving out the engine its like putting a bag over your head and trying breath through a small hole open the botton of the bag fully what a differance that you now can pull in that much air the engine is the same way it needs all the air it can get to perform right give it what it wants.the new carb and the old have to be the same opening to work right

Dave: When you have exhausted all other things, take a compression check. You may have a sticking or burnt intake or exhaust valve, or worn piston rings. Also- The Carb cross-shaft must not wiggle in its holes! This admits outside air into the carb, which lessens the suction which brings fuel into the intake manifold area. If the valves are worn, this lessens the suction, too. You may have to install new piston rings to finally make it run good. In that case, do a valve job on it, too, and check the connecting rod bearing for excessive wear! An overhaul kit will do wonders for an older engine! RJ

His engine won't start. A rebuild won't help.

Dave,

Do this. Apply some heavy grease to the throttle shaft and around the carburetor/manifold/head mating areas. Start it. If it starts and runs for a while, you have a vacuumm leak and you know where to look. If not, post back.

BTW, for an engine that runs but runs poorly, you can check for a vacuum leak by applying some carb cleaner with a squirt can to the same areas while it is running. Any change in idle quality indicates an vacuum leak.

Given that you just replaced the carburetor, a vacuum leak is a good possibility. Using the wrong gasket(s), no gaskets(s), old gaskets(s), dirty mating surfaces, over/under tightening the mounting bolts... all these things will cause vacuum leaks.

Had the same problem, found it was sucking air through the holes where the butterfly pivots. Also check where the carb mounts to the engine. You can seal these up with high temp silicone gasket material.

UPDATE:
The fuel goes into the bowl attached to the carb, but there is not enough pressure to bring it through the carb and into the engine. When we use the fluid, it turns over and "wants" to take the fuel but no dice.

Dave,
Check the jet under the bolt that holds the bowl on and the bolt itself to make sure passages are clear. DO NOT use wire or anything metal to clean. Use only carb cleaner under pressure (can).
Good luck.....

The jet and bowl are clean. Apparently, it doesn't want to take the fuel from there into the rest of the engine.

Dave, If you have gas to the bowl it has to be either a carbuter or a vacume problem. Check the gaskets and valves.

Took the bowl off, it had a ton of rust in it. We freed the float and seems to be functioning, however it looks to have a good amount of rust still on it.
If I were to rebuild this carbuerator, what websites do you guys suggest for an online site that has briggs and stratton parts. We need a good online supply house because we will eventually need to replace the dry-rotted tires as well.

you need to put an inline gas filter on very quickly.. i would also buy a plastic shut off valve & install in gas line unless mower has one at the tank already,,, filters are every where but in line valves can be found at carquest ($5)if you aregetting black specks in bowlyou need to replace the gas line too, some fuels will eat away at the old style gas lines..carb is probably fine unless the throdle shaft is sloppy in the alum casting, thus sucking extra air in..later
