I have a John Deere STX 38 That has gone through 2 new batteries in the last 6 weeks. Although its possible that the batteries were bad, is it also possible that I have a bad voltage regulator, or some other component of the electrical system? Any ideas out there?

check for a draw.take the postive wire of the battery.take a test light hook one lead to the battery post take the battery post lead and put the other end to the test light.if every thing is off you wont have a light in the test light.ifs there is a light check for a draw.make sure the key is off also the electric clutch unpluged one at a time till the light goes out. that will tell you what item is causeing the draw.take both batterys have them fully charged make sure they are full with electrolite or distilled water groc or drug store for your distilled water.take both batterys to a local service station that has a good load tester. when they load each battery they should not drop below 11 volts for a fulley charged battery.when they start heading down below 9volts time to replace it.when you do get a battery get the one with most cranking amps it will say cca.also you want the the most reserve.when you get a good battery you will be able to tell the differants in the weight. compare it to the other one.when the season is over take the battery out put in a warm place and charge it once a month.then when you are ready to put it in for the season.you should have no problem with it starting each time.

Ben has given you a good place to start, sounds like an over charge to me. BUT as you said, maybe you got 2 bad bat's. It happens.

Use a voltmeter and measure accross the battery with the engine running. Should get 13.8 - 14.8 volts. If you don't get over 13 volts or over 15 volts you have a charging system problem and need to troubleshoot that. Maybe the voltage regulator ?
Maybe a bad connection or even the ignition switch ??
