I went to an auction on Wednesday and purchased a JD LX188 for $800.00. Someone had run into something so the hood was busted and it had a flat front tire but other than that it seems to be taken care of quite well. I would really like to know what year it is. The product number on the back of the tractor is MOLX188102487. I also have the code off of the Kawasaki engine FD501V-A300. Sure would appreciate it if someone could help me out. Also, is there anywhere or way to get an operators manual for this? What is everybodies opinion on using aftermarket filters (if available) VS. JD parts for maintainance?
Thanks for any help and opinions in advance!

Brian - Your LX188 is a 1994 with a 48" deck. The quickest way to get an operator's manual, or tech and parts manuals, is by calling Deere Service Publications at 1-800-522-7448.

My experience with respect to filters, is to go with Deere. Sometimes, the oil filter costs are not that much different. You also need to keep in mind the bypass valve in the oil filter may react at a different pressure value in an aftermarket filter. Also, some aftermarket filters, while they fit at the face, are sometimes either longer or shorter in length, affecting the required oil volume. As far as air filters go, if it's a Kawasaki engine, my experience is there are not too many aftermarket options in that area.

Deere does have a kit with filters, oil, and plugs for your model of tractor. I don't have the number or price, but your local Deere dealer can provide that information.

If the tractor runs good, $800 sounds like a pretty good price, even given the cosmetic damage it has. Congratulations. - Dave

My local JD dealer has a LX188 that I want to buy. Is there a meathod for me to determine the year of the machine myself?

thanks
