Steve,

What carb do you have, how new is it, and is there any selonoid on the carb? I would also guess that the carb is leaking gas into the cylinder head and causing the engine to fill with gas and as the level raises in the crank it eventually seeps into the cylinder because a fluid seeks its own level. Bringing oil with it.

lots of luck

This is a defect in the design of the OHV Briggs engines. Pull the head. Look at the gasket area between the cylinder and the chamber the pushrods run through. I would bet money that there is a leak there. If there is it will be discolored. A new headgasket is a 7 dollar part from a Briggs dealer.

If it's oil and not gas fouling the plug, you have a cracked ring/piston or very worn rings/cylinder walls.

I THINK I KNOW WHAT IT IS-- OIL AND GAS BOTH-- DRAIN IT COMPLETELY-- CHANGE FILTER--THEN PUT A INLINE SUT-OFF IN GAS LINE-PUT NEW OIL IN- AND WHEN NOT IN USE SHUT OFF GAS-NOT ALLWAYS BUT WHEN YOUR LEAST EXPECT GAS WILL GO PAST CARB AND CAUSE THIS--LET ME KNOW IF IT HELPS
