I replaced the 12H.P. engine on my tractor with a 16H.P. model 326431 Briggs. I now have 12 hours on this used engine. The only way it will start is
if I manually hold the throttle plate almost closed. It then idles and runs good with plenty of power. The problem is there on hot or cold starts, but must be choked when cold. When the engine is not running the throttle plate is held
wide open under slight spring pressure from the governor arm. Any ideas to cure this problem?

if its a twin cylinder briggs you have to use the choke even when they are warm on most engines i have seen. look on front of carburator on body underneath the fuel pump assembly there should be an adjustment screw there turn it in about a quarter of a turn. that will prob fix it short of stretching the governor spring, )which i dont recommend) the throttle will always sit wide open at idle with engine off. one more thing, these engines are very picky about the freshness of the gasoline, even if gas goes the slightest bit on the stale side they get hard to start and sometimes run like crap i have repaired enough of these engines to know this. i really hope this helped. good luck
