My starter generator needs rebuilding on my bolens 1050. I taken it apart and the brushes are worn down less than half and the front bearing needs replacing. What needs to be done with the armature? Can it be tested out of the unit by a auto electrical shop. Is there anything I can do ? It's an old tractor and I don't want to spend a whole lot on it. and Any information will be apprecated.

Basically you can just give armature a good looking over. Check bearing end for wear, are wires on armature still in solid shape with coating intact, etc. If it looks good just give it a good cleaning and shine up armature with light paper and install your new brushes and bearing. If you need a new armature you can expect around $100. for a shop to rebuild it.

Any good electrical repair shop can rebuild it. The front bearing is a common 203SS that is used on older chevy alternatoers and generators
