I have a Bolens Husky 1254 and the axle turns, but the wheels do not. Actually the wheels will only turn a little with a slight jerking motion. It bearly makes it up a light grade. The locking nut on the left wheel is tight. I have downloaded the Illustrated parts catalog, but I am not a mechanic.

If you can push the tractor with the engine off. Then its an easy fix. On the inside of the right rear wheel(viewed from the rear). Is a roll pin, it slides into the drive collar located inside the right rear hub. Held in place by a hitch pin. This is for free wheeling of the tractor. In order to roll the tractor with the engine not running, the hitch pin is removed, and the roll pin is pulled out. In order to drive the wheels, the roll pin must be re-engaged.

Walt, I know all about the hitch pin for free wheeling. It is still in place. The problem occured over a month or so of heavy snow plowing uphill. It began as a small problem and ended when I couldn't even scrape an inch of snow. The last time I used it I could barely get it into the garage. I had to have it in first gear and push it over a small lip going into the garage.

It has been sitting in the garage for two years now and I hope I can fix it. All my friends call it "the Beast" because it would out plow every tractor. We would put two tractors plow to plow and it would have no problem pushing the other tractor backwards. Yeah, I know that is hard on tractors, but I never lost a bet!

My grandfather gave me the tractor about 10 years ago. He was a mechanic for 40 years or so and had done some modification of the carb(I think) because it was always hard to start. After the mod it would start instantly. He said he bored something out. We had replaced the transmission about 15 years ago when one of the gears broke. We picked up a transmission at Ray's Mower in Boyertown, PA since I live near Harrisburg, PA. My grandfather is still around, but has bad knees and I hate to have him mess with it.

Thanks for the info.

I would suspect either the clutch linings are worn, or the brass ring gear inside the transmission is worn out if that freewheel pin is in place. You can drain the oil, and remove the bottom cover of the transmission to look at it. If a lot of brass filings come out with the oil, the chances of the gear being gone is very likely. Rotate the gear through one full turn to visually check the whole thing for wear.

That gear is turned by a shaft with a worm gear on it. I've replaced one before, its a bit time consuming, but I didn't think it was excessively difficult.
