the main thing that will cause gas to shoot out of the carb is:
1. float is cracked and is full of fuel, take off and shake it.
2. needle and seat is eroded and leaking fuel past the seat.
3. you have a vent plugged in you carb and the float bowl is not venting.

When gas shoots out of carb when turning over is a good sign of an intake valve stuck open! I would do a compression check .

Keeping in mind what Rich said, I would check the valve lash adjustments on the engine, should be .009 intake, .018 exhaust, check cold. Kenny
