Ariens S-14G Can't find reverse!?

I just bought a Ariens Model 93101 14HP GT Hydrostatic Garden tractor from a fellow about 500 miles away. The thing is almost spotless, came with the front loader installed, a 5' dozer blade, tiller and several other little items. The thing starts great and everything seems to operate fine. Only one little nagging problem, I can't get it into reverse. The fellow I bought it from backed it out of the garage and put it through all of the gears for me several times and then loaded it on my trailer. I know now I was a bonehead for not driving it myself but it seemed like such a great deal, I wanted to get out of there before he changed his mind. The clutch should not be the problem since the pedal neutralizes the hyd. trans. And I do know that the shift lever needs to be pulled in or left and back. Everytime I do this I seem to get 4th gear. Can anyone help the bonehead?

My Ariens S-14 transmission works like this, forward move lever to right and forward, the further forward the lever the faster forward. Return lever to mid or nuetral position, it engages a second lever which when pulled to the rear puts tractor in reverse, the farther to the rear the faster the reverse speed. The other rearward position is for park and starting. My tractor is a 1975 model, mid Pto shaft to run 48" lawn mower, electric clutch on PTO.
