I have a tr10d wisconsin motor on my Bolens 1000. I have completey rebuilt the Zenith carb with new gaskets. I have a new spark plug, magneto coil, points, and condenser. I have adjusted the points gap and timing per manuals that I have found online. It seems that there is something wrong with my carb or governor linkage. I had the governor linkage off when I had the carb off and cant quite remember how to hook it up. I got the engine running and it ran for about 2-3 days. I adjusted the idle jet and main needle so it would idle and rev smoothly. I checked my new plug to make sure it was gapped right, yep, .035. When I try to start the engine, it takes forever to start, I have to hold the carb butterfly arm completley closed and baby it from there, once it gets warm it'll idle fine. But when I try to throttle up, it hesitates and dies. I tried to richen/lean the mixture to see if that helped. I thought it did but when I tried to throttle back down the engine died. Could the governor linkage be out of adjustment or do I have carb problems? The fuel system has been cleaned and I have an inline filter between the tank and carb. thanks

Hi Mike
If the motor ran OK for 2-3 days then is hard to
start, check the following
1. point setting and condenser (substitute one) these may have changed.. The fact that you have to hold the butterfly in the carb shut may indicate enough gas but a weak spark.
2. The gov. only control the RPM when the engine is running so that is not a problem at this point.
3. if the electrics are OK, take the carb off, spray a little starting ether in the intake
and fire it up. if it starts quickly and revs up then dies, you got carb problems.. go thru the rebuild process again and check everything..
Hope this helps some, also check with the fellows over on the yahoo - bolenstractorsclub.
their a good bunch and pretty smart despite the fact that they mess with old bolens stuff!

I'll try what you described. My father had the carb off again tonight. He was cleaning once more to make sure there were no other particles clogging any jets/holes. I have another set of points and condenser. I'll try these too. Thanks
