Hello, I have access to an Ariens Rocket tiller model 901003. The problem is that it has no engine. I went to the Ariens web site, but the don't have a manual online for that model. Can anyone give me some information on this tiller. The only thing that I have found out is that it was made in 1977. Is it possible to find a good used Tecumseh engine? I was told that it needs the engine with the auxiliary shaft. I don't think it would be finacially prudent to put a new engine on a tiller that old. It does, though, appear to be in excellent shape. The wheels spin when I spin the front pulley, and all the levers work. How about an electronic manual? Does anyone have one that they could email me? What engine does this animal use? Are their newer replacements available?

Any and all help with this will be greatly appreciated. I have a large garden, (80x30) and need a tiller with more power and ability than my old 3.5hp ftont tine AMF!

Thank you, Steve

I think you might be missing the boat by not fixing that one. I have the same tiller and it has the hh70 that lucas spoke of. The entire gearbox is cast iron and very well built. I have had mine for the past year and have sorta restored it. If anything, the motor is the weak link. Watch the seals like Lucas said.

If you don't want to fix it, I would love to have it for spare parts. Let me know.

Chad, I have decided to "fix" it. Many people have told me it is too good of a machine to "part out." Since it has no engine, I am getting a new one. I have tried and tried to find a used one, but have had no success at all. Also, since I don't have an engine, I don't have the pulleys that are on the shafts of the engine. Do you have a book that has the part numbers for those pulleys? I am hopeing they are not too much considering the cost of the engine.

Thanks,
Steve

Steve,

I made the mistake of cleaning my tiller to look at the numbers better and happened to wipe them off. Why they wouldn't stamp the numbers into the frame is beyond me. Anyway, what I did was to contact Ariens through there website and gave them a good description of what I had with the serial number and they told me that it was 901006 tiller. So I went on Ebay and got a parts manual for a couple of bucks. My parts manual shows that a 901006 is a 7hp tecumseh and a 901005 is a 5hp tecumseh. So you might want to contact them as the pulleys are probably different. But the pulley numbers for my engine are:

Crank pulley-01121
Cam Puller-01007

My Parts book also shows that the 5hp engine would not have had reverse, so if you have a reverse idler and bracket, then you probably have a larger engine than a 5hp.

HTH,

Chad

that rocket is the same as mine and came with tecumseh hh70 7hp engine. tecumseh supplies an 8 hp for it now as the 7hp hasnt been made for quite some time ,most tecumseh dealers know the airens engine replacement. you only need the aux pto if you want reverse on the wheels, otherwise one pto will work everything else.i have put some 5hp biggs on rockets and seem to work ok except for breaking hard virgin soil.i also have parts and service manuals and airens still has parts for the tiller... you may want to change the two gearbox oils with 90w and watch for leaks as you use it.mine is a 1978 and ive put a couple seals in the tine shaft a few years ago,but its not hard to do.you have to rock the wheels to get the wheels in high or low but to engage the tines just flip the lever forward and it drops into gear when the belts tighten.great tiller...lucas
