I recently put four 3HP vertical shaft Briggs engines back toghether and have had difficulty tring to get them to fire. When I've tried to pull on the ropes they sometimes want to pullback (Not good on the fingers). This would be a result of backfire correct? I am sure all camshaft marks are timed correctly. Points I gaped at .020 mag I gaped at .010. All engines have spark and fuel is getting to the plug. Is there anything else on these engines I have to make sure is timed? Can anyone explain to me what "timing demention" is? I believe this has to do with piston locatin at the time of spark. Whats's the trick to get these to fire (without geting my fingers pulled off)? Thanks for any advice!

Dan, You can have worn rings for the age of tractor if never rebuilt. I also own same model 129. I would also check one other item located behind the carb is a the vent you are talking about I believe. This has a rubber hose on and is a square plate inside is a baffle and reed clean this up real good and replace if broken or the circle that has worn onto this reed is deep, clean the filter inside real good or replace.this allows crankcase ventilation. When the motor is running check that there is not smoke or very little coming out exhaust indicating oil usage, pull plug and see if much black residule up inside porcleen oil build up after firing. You can step up the plug heat if necessary .Easy motor to rebuild and well worth the cost as long as the transmission is good.

On B&S vertical engines if the blade is not on shaft you need a balance.Engine will kick back other wise.

Got a Kohler K-181S that wants to do that.

It is electric start, but its similar.

I choke it 100%, turn key for 3 seconds. release and it hits then kicks the engine backwards, this is what pulls your rope back.

until I lessen the Choke and ensure the Throttle is all the way out it continues to do this.

Timing:

The spark plug is supposed to spark when the piston is at or just before TDC ( Top Dead Center) which is when the piston is completely topped out.
If your cam timing is off, it may be sparking, but it may spark while one of the valves is open, or the piston may not be at TDC.
You may be way too rich on your carb settings, floddign the engine. Your intake valve may not be closing all the way (seating)

Hope this helps!
