Just for curiosity, what type of oils do you guys prefer to use in small single cylinder air cooled engines (e.g. Kubota, Honda, Briggs, Kawasaki, etc )when fitted to garden machinery if you do not expect the outside air temps. to fall below freezing point. I do not mean different brands as such, I mean different grades. Do you prefer straight 30w or multigrades e.g. 10/30w?
TIA
Roy

Most engines for summer use need SAE 30
Winter use go with a 5w30 multi oil.
I have used synthetic 30 year round without any problems, but it seldomly gets very cold here,

i recently serviced a bunch of kawasaki powered scag mowers, the manual said straight 30 only. when napa sent over a case, they had mixed in some non detergent oil. dont use that, only used in air compressors now.

My tiller engine has tag recommends 10/30 30 degrees (f) or below, snow blower says 10/30 for normal winter use, lawn tractors -12 hp and 16hp tags say 40 degrees. In practice 10/30 used late fall and first use in spring, change to straight 30 until midd summer 90+ degree when straight 40 used in 16 hp oil burner/rattler and maybe tiller, 10/30 changed to when frost appears. Have used 20/50 valvoline racing oil/motorcycle oil in summer also. RN.

Geez, save yourself a lot of trouble and get Rotella T 15w-40 or similar brand 15w-40 truck oil. Works excellent in all your stuff, gas and diesel, including your car/truck.

Remember, EPA and manufacturer's fuel economy requirements. They are after sales and EPA. You're after longevity.

30 is Ok for the older engines. However most new ones seem to recommend 10/30 oil. If it's a new engine use whatever the tag says. I use Penzoil in every thing I have.

Kohler commands use a 10W30, because of hydraulic lifters, liquid cooled engines can use 10W30, all other air cooled engines should use SAE 30W. the multi-vis break down too easy with the heat of an air cooled engine. As for Shell Rotella T 15W40, it will not work well in a Kohler command, though, that oil is a little thick for the command's hydraulic lifters. I ahve used it also with good luck in old Kohlers and briggs.

My Kohler command 15 has run 3 years with 15w-40 truck oil and hasn't had any problems along with all my equipment regardless of lifter type, including my highway vehicles. Had the spark plug out the other day and shined a flashlight in the cylinder and you can still see the factory crosshatch hone marks on the cyl.....after 3 yrs in an air cooled riding lawnmower that mows a 2 acre yard twice a week....geez. What else could you ask for?

I use Shell 15w40 Rotella in all my tractors, diesel pu's and small gas and diesel engines. I have now, for many years, and have "not" had one oil related problem!

I plan to keep on useing the Shell Rotella oil.
