I took the housing off the front of the engine. How do I remove the rewind starter clutch assembly and the flywheel so I can get to the points and condenser?

Your help is appreciated.

Thanks
Brad

Brad, If your engine was made after 1980 it has no points or condensor. The way you can tell is look at the code#(the 8 diget number on blower housing) first two digets is year.if 98,engine was made in 1998.if their 00 then engine was made in 2000 ETC.If made after 1980 it has electric igntiion. And your problem is your ignition coil.
The way these coils work is,if engine runs till it gets hot then quits and wont spark till it cools off the coil is going bad and needs to be replaced.

But if engine is pre 1980 after all,you take the rotating cooling screen off. Then while holding the crankshaft still tap clutch off with hammer(lefty losey righty tighty, BEING CAREFUL NOT TO BRAKE EARS OFF CLUTCH).And then while prying on flywheel with big screwdriver or crowsfoot bump flywheel with hammer till it comes lose.Pull off and points is under round silver cover.points set at 0.20 and coil gap set at 0.10 from flywheel.Email me with any more problems

Thanks for the info. I was able to get the clutch and flywheel off without any problems. I have a '79 B&S, so I have points.

The symptoms I had is as you described where the engine would run for about 15-20 minutes, and then die. No spark. When it cooled, it would start right up. Now I can't get any spark at all.

I purchased a tune up kit that has the points, condenser, etc. I'll put it in tomorrow.

Is there a way to test the coil, or should I just replace it? Could a weak condenser also have the same symptoms? I hate to spend $30 when it's not needed.

Thanks for all your help!!

Brad

Yeah,Brad it could. The job of the condensor is to store electricity produced when the magnet passes the coil.If Alumnium sheets inside condensor are damaged it wont store/hold any.

TO TEST COIL
There are two ways, you can use a ohm metter,or they do make a special coil/condensor tester.
I've been useing a coil/condensor tester for so long that I forget how to use a ohm meter. Sorry.
Less your going test lots of coils, and charge for it it's not worth it.Mine was over $300.00. Your local lawnmower fix-it shop will prob.be able to tell you how to use an ohm metter to test coils.

PS. When you put points in,rotate crankshsft till points open. Then using condensor close gap to 0.20,tighten hold down screw.Rotate crank till closed & run dollar bill through points to clean.Reason for dollar is money dosn't leave anything behind, like normal paper does.
