I know it varies with use but does it hurt it to set with tension on it all winter. After is set all winter it lasted 30 minutes after coming all apart. It was almost new from last year, is this normal?

I bought a JD 322 in '91, the mower deck is belt drive (2 belts). It's got 550 hrs, 12 seasons mowing 1.5 acres on the original belts with no sign they'll need changing any time soon.

funny you should mention belts,a couple of years ago a friend of mine had an old jd 110 and the belt took a crap on him on sat afternoon and deere was closed so he goes to o'reillys and gets the best belt they have, puts it on and gets 5 minutes out of it,so he takes it back and bitchs gets another one and this time he gets about 3 minutes, then he calls me wondering why his belts keep breaking and i tell him to wait til monday and get the original deere belt, and i tell him it will probably be cheaper too,so monday he goes and gets a deere belt puts it on and it's still mowin, and it was almost half the price of the o'reillys belt.

I never take tension off belts for storage. I just buy good belts and good equipment. Belt quality makes all the difference in the world. And the cheaper the tractor the cheaper the belts used are.

I wouldn't think so. When you buy belts, don't go cheap. The "blue" rated. I leave all tension off mine for winter.
