316 problem question

We recently purchased a home that "came with" a 316. No manual, of course. Used it once with no problems but today my dear husband (ahem) was messing with it and he pushed the button with a pic of a light on it and the whole thing died immediately and now it won't start at all. Nothing, dead, kaput. Anyone have a suggestion for us? (aside from don't push buttons!)

Hello,
First thing first.
1) Battery test make sure you have 12 volts + post to - post. A)If you don't --RECHARGE or REPLACE BATTERY I would replace it and be done with it. 2)You need to sit on the seat and turn the key over (like you are trying to start engine) while your husband check for 12 volts at the start/solenoid. Go from post to post and a 12 volt reading is what you are looking for here. A) If you don't get 12 volts 1)It could be the solenoid is bad. 2)BUT more than likely if the BATTERY IS GOOD AND NO 12 volts from POST to POST on the solenoid when the key is turned-- You are probably not getting a 12 volt current to the solenoid (which activates the solenoid allowing a internal switch to make contact, thus allowing a 12 volt charge to pass through the two post on the solenoid.) 3)Another check is, again with you on the seat turning the key, have the husband use a jumper wire and make contact between the two post on the solenoid. If the engine tries to start than Chances are the SOLENOID is BAD.
Start here and see if you can find out with this information what might be wrong. We can go from here later.
Thanks
Jim

These are all good advice but there are two fuses located on the rear wall of the console. I think one of them has the starting circuit in it. If it blows again, check the light circuit for a short. Also, buy the real JD manuals. They have a wealth of information in them.

Dave K,

You got me on that one, (kinda).

Serial numbers BELOW 285,001 DO NOT USE FUSES.

285,001 AND UP use two fuses, BUT RETAIN THE TROUBLESOME CIRCUIT BREAKER, also.

If the mower deck was on when the engine died, you must turn the pto switch off before starting.

There are no fuses, just a circuit breaker, a little shiney rectangular box, with two threaded studs sticking out, with push-on electrical connectors on them. They get rusty and you get a poor connection.

First, verify that there is charge in the battery, and remove and clean and reinstall the battery cables. If that doesn't help, look for the circuit breaker, hanging from the wiring harness in the area between the ket switch, and the starter solenoid, which is under the battery.

Also, check for rust and corrosion on the terminals, at the back of the key switch.

Manuals are available direct from Deere at: 1-800-522-7448.

Not cheap, but definitely worth it, if you're going to keep the tractor around. And they're a darn good, heavy-built tractor.
