LJ: I have a case 220 and it shifts just fine. Is your friends machine a hydralic drive or stick shift with a gear box? I assume from your writing it has a gearbox, but if it's a hydrolic drive, I will try to help.

I can't believe the spelling on this site.
It's HEARD not HERD
It's THERE not THER
Why don't you dummies take some spelling lessons?

LJ: OK, I have never tried adjusting the valve. I can tell you my Case 220 is very sensitive when moving the lever forward or backward from the neutral position. If I push down on the shift lever and gently move it forward I don't experience any grabbing or jerking on take-off. On the other hand, if I move the shift lever forward or backward quickly, I can spin the tires on take-off. I have never messed around with the valve, but there probably is an adjustment somewhere on it. I know my Case dealer told me 15 or so years ago that the valve costs about $500.00 so make sure your buddy understands that before getting too carried away.

LJ: Almost sounds like the tranny is shifting from low to high range on it's own. If I place my tranny in high range and push forward on the speed lever quickly the tractor will snap your head back, but I never experienced a the herky, jerky travel as described. The only suggestion I can offer if not already done is to try changing the hydraulic oil. The hydraulic oil is relatively cheap as I recall. I only ever added hydraulic oil once, when I replace the original 10 HP Kohler Engine about three years ago. If all else fails and the Case 220 is still in fair condition, I'd recommend that Gary let the dealer check it out. I have no complaints about my 220, it has been a real workhorse both summer (cutting grass, plowing sod, hauling, etc) and winter (plowing snow). Must say I've been very happy with this machine and the few $$$$$ I had to invest in it the past twenty some years.
