Are the panels on my BS I/C 18hp necessary?

Hey, y'all.
I have a 18 hp Briggs I/C twin on my old Murray mower and have wondered if it would hurt anything to remove the cowlings, fairings, panels, or whatever-you-call'ems thta lie over the cylinder heads on either side. It would make it easier for me to get to the plugs and to inspect the fins to make sure they're not getting plugged up, but I worry that the cowlings may be necessary to route air over the heads for cooling... What do y'all think?

Thanks,
Darren

I agree with teej but there could also be cosmetic sheet metal/plastic Murry used to make your lawn mower look good. Those are best off. The better your air cooled can get air the cooler it runs.

Common sense can be your guide. You can see the air inlet on the top and the head's fins. Just think about getting air from the inlet (down draft) over to and past the head and out. If it is more than that it is probably cosmetic. I only know of 1 Briggs that cooled the crankcase also and it was a 3.5 hp Quantum. It was a push mower and had a gap between the mounting flange and the mower deck.

Its an air cooled motor, those are required for the proper flow of air over the heads, around the cylinders, etc. Those engines will overheat easily without them.
