The 12 hp. kohler in my case 220 started the spring with no power at the coil and no spark. While poking around with the test light at the voltage regulator I tried the starter and it started and ran fine. Not really believing that I wouldn't see that little quirk again, I shut it down for the night. The next day it started but would only idle, stumbling and backfiring at high speed. Thinking it was a fuel problem, I cleaned the carb and fuel lines and readjusted everything, which had no effect at all. After a day of messing with this, I suddenly have no spark again. The coil, condenser, plug, wire and points are new. I still think the regulator is funky but I don't see any connection between the 2 problems and I'm not sure how to test it anyway. Anyone have any ideas?

OK, the other 2 guys never worked on a CASE before-- Check the fuse HOLDER first, the wires should push into he center where the fuse goes with no binding. if there stuck in the plastic, (melted) throw it away. Check the fuse for arcing on the ends and for melted solder in the ends. The fuse holder was the weakest link on all the garden tractors if you replace it don't put in a $.99 one. HTH

The following is assuming the engine has a 12 Volt ignition system with a round-can, automotive-type coil, rather than a magneto system, with the coil under the flywheel.

Take a test light, and check for voltage at the (+) side of the coil, with the switch on. You should have voltage to that terminal, fed from the ignition switch. Once you have verified that you have voltage that far, move on to the (-) (points) side of the coil.

Try to start the engine, while checking the (-) side of the coil with the test light.

The light should blink along with the points opening and closing, and if it does, you should have spark at the plug.

If the light is "on" and does not blink, you have an "open" connection between the coil and the points, or miss-adjusted or dirty points.

If the light is "off", you have an open coil, a short in the wiring between the coil and the points, a shorted condensor, a short at the points, or the points are not opening.

Yeah, two comes to mind.Trace down ground wire and make sure it does not have any naked places in it that could be touching frame from time to time. And when you replaced the points, did you set them on 0.20 and did you clean them??

You can download a repair manual from kohler website @ Link
