I have a companion 12 hp mower. It was purchased around 1990.Model 917.259270. It will run for some time maybe 25 minutes then just dogs down and stops. I have adjusted the Idle mixture and high idle screws according to booklet instructions. However i do not know what to do with the fast idle stop screw. The plug is new and gapped to .030. The gas is fresh regular unleaded. I am getting back fire depending on where the screws are set. I blew through the air screen on the gas cap.I would greatly appreciate any help. Engine is Tecumseh. Lawn mower is stored in unheated dry shed. John

John, simce it a 90?? model I'm asumeing that it's got electric ignition, just off the top of my head I'd say that sounds like an ignition problem, but ignition & fuel sometimes can sound alike.

Crank your engine, run it till at goes dead and then check for spark.I'm thinking that your engine runs till it gets hot and the coil starts brakinng down. And when ever this happens,an engine will not fire again till it colls off.If this is what its doing the coil needs replacing.

Yea, a carb usually gives you a problem right away and during use. Just for reference, the screws are usually set 1 1/4 turn out from tight.
If youre lucky you have a bolt on coil/plug wire that needs no gapping or anything. They usually run about $50.
