How do I find and test the compression release on a B&S 18hp IC twin?

I have taken the starter down, disassembled it, and cleaned it. There was some crud on the armature and between the armature and the magnets. The brushes are about .5" long and engage the armature. The armature has a .1" groove worn in it where the brushes run. There is some noticeable play between the armature shaft and bushing at the top of the housing. The rear bearing has very little play and turns smoothly. All the teeth are on the plastic bendix gear, but worn and it rides smoothly on the carrier. Does this starter sound good...or do I need to get a new one?

I would probably preform burial rights on that one and get a new one. Briggs starters are expensive through Briggs, but we get an aftermarket starter with a one year warranty for $89.95, pplus shipping.briggs starters are down to $109.95. You can aso find them on E-Bay for about $70.00, make sure you get part number 497596.

Sure, it's HIS money so let's start throwing parts at it.

Mike, I hope you tested the starter before you took it apart or had someone test it for you. They are very easy to test... if they work and don't draw excessive current they go back into service.

I do not know who you are or what your little game is about doggin me about every SUGGESTION I make trying to help someone to repair something. I was taught a long time ago that if the expense to repair something exceeds the cost of repair, then replace it and according to what this man said on his post, his starter is worn out and needs replaced. If this continues, I will make no more posts on this board, I am trying to help people and do not need your badmouthing

It was you who first replied to one of my posts with one of your foul-mouthed responses, remember? The world is full of cowards who can dish it out but can't take it. Good bye and good riddance!

A B&S 18HP Twin flathead? If it is a flathead the is not a decompression release that can hang-up. There is an " Easy Spin " lobe on the camshaft that acts as a decompression release but it is active all th time. I think you need a new starter.
