My Sears tractor with a 15.5 briggs stopped dead while mowing. It will sometimes backfire very loudly when trying to restart. This has happened a few times this season. Now I have no spark at all. Any ideas were to start.

Charlie,

The backfire could be a carb problem, but if you get no spark also here is a list of a few things I can think of.

1. check carb excessive rich setting\
2. check all wires leading from ignition system, for grounding or bare wires.
3. check flywheel key to make sure fly wheel is not slipping on shaft, this would cause out of time issues and could also be your backfire problem

check these things,

Dave
