I have a 16hp Briggs in a Deutz-Allis Lawn Tractor. It will not start. I have checked the fuel system and cleaned the carb. Both cylinders have good spark. I removed the flywheel and checked the key. It was not sheared. I removed both valve covers and all valves are opening and closing. I have two questions, 1. On the bottom of the carb bowl there is a electrically controlled valve. How can I test it? 2. How can I test the compression release feature? Thanks, kal

Kim,

what was the engine doing BEFORE it stopped working.

Don't fly off the handle yet. You say you cleaned the carb, BUT did you change the needle and seat, from your post it seems you know what you are talking about. I have worked on a bunch of the later model briggs with the electronic fuel shut offs. the biggest problem has been the fuel delivery through the needle and seat.

I have seen them backfire, start hard, and flood the engine crank case.

so just what did the motor do before your troubles started????? ??

Dave,
I know we can get it fixed without having to spend money at the repair shop!!!!! !!!

Make sure there is power to that wire on the carburetor bowl. check it with a test light! Turn on ignition for the test. RJ PS: Make sure the hole in the gas cap is open! Blow into it from the inner side, if yer cheeks puff out and it seems the air isn't going thru it, clean out the leetle hole with a small wire! Ya have to put it up agin yer mouth, can't just blow on it, make a seal!

Exactly what happens when you try to start it? What does the plug's electrode look like?

Both of plug's electrodes are very close to normal condition and color, and they are never wet when I remove them. kal

When I try to start it, it turns over but NEVER fires. I took out each spark plug and injected some gas directly into the cylinders. When I turned it over flames blew out the throat of the carb. Backfire? It acts like it is out of time. As I said, the flywheel key was not sheared. Also I do not hear any internal noises when it is turning over????? Thanks, kal

Intake valve is open when plug fires... engine is out of time, valves are set wrong, possible internal damage. Have a good small engine shop look at it.
