My Wheelhorse is great with all those atachments. Although it's been running poorly since I've had it. First I cleaned the points and electrical contacts with emry cloth. That seemed to help starting. New plug of course, some carb cleaner. Ran ok for a few months (weekend use only) Put in a new Intersate battery. Now sometimes on start up it does not ignite. Wiggled points wire slightly and that seemed to help. Lastly durring another start up the battery was extremely low. I think there is some charging issue. I think most of my problems are electrical although I seem to be doing alot of guessing. Any comments are greatly appreciated.

Thank guys for all of your input. I think yesterday afternoon I narrowed down the problem to the regulator. I found while slow idling an intermitant 14.5 volts from terminals one and two to ground and sometims only 11.5 volts. When I finger fidlled the right hand coil contact point I began getting a steady 14.5+ volts. Any one know where I can get a new regulator for the Delco remy 12 volt system. Hard to read the numbers of the plate. serial# 1101988 3J 3.??

Thank you and muchly appreciated.
Andrew.

My family owned one of these from Dec. 1963 to 1995. So I know them very well. If the starter-gen. cranks the engine then the unit is ok. Look at the wiring from the regulator to battery, also from the regulator to the generator, clean all termanals. If that dosen't work regulator is bad.
Replace the points and condensor and the wire from the points to the coil. Also look at the push rod that opens the pionts, these like to wear out. They only built these tractors for the 1964 model year. Should have a Koler 10hp engine in it.

Install a new set of points set at .020 (plus condensor), clean the terminals at the coil , install a new plug set at .025 and change the battery . Once you get the engine running put it at high idle speed and check the voltage out put of the starter generator , it should be about 13.5 volts . If not you will have to check the regulator to see if you have voltage out put at the middle terminal (red wire) and current going into the regulator at the far right terminal. Let me know what you find out .

Andrew,

when you wiggled the points wire you said "it seemed to help" if there is a cover covering the points clean off all of the dirt and check the wire coating and see if there is bare wire showing.

Emery cloth leaves residue that fouls points. Always use a point file.

If you have a DMM you can check the alternator/generator... should be about 13.5 volts when running. If it's more like battery voltage, 12.6 volts, it's not working. Cleaning all connections isn't a bad idea either.

First off, what type of machine is this? Tractor, tiller, what? I'm not familiar with the numbers. Then, in Yahoo groups, there is a Wheel Horse club, where you can post your questions, and folks will answer you, just like here.
Go to: Link Register there. Those folks are very helpful! Rusty Jones
