I own a `80 Case 444, with Kohler 14 horse power engine. The engine is worn out, after being rebuilt twice. I would like to upgrade to a 16 to 20 hp engine, but not sure if any companies make an engine with the same bolt patterns my Kohler had. It had a 1 1/4 inch long, one inch diameter shaft with a 1/4 inch keyway. Does anyone know if Onan still makes engines that would be a bolt in swap, with out buying new couplers and a different clutch assembly? A dealer told me Kohler doesn't make my 14 hp engine any more. Any info would be of great help. Thank you!

Not sure if you still have the Case - but interestingly I have had one sitting around here with a blown engine for a few years now. I have just recently (like last week) purchased a bigger engine for mine - used. The old Kohler was only a 12 horse. I had pulled the 46 in. mower off and re-mounted it under a Cub Cadet (LOL I know pretty weird - but sure cuts good) My point is I didn't need the front drive anymore - just the rear stub to run the hydraulic pump. The engine I bought is a 20.5 Briggs engine - and the shaft is identical thickness with the same keyway. The shaft is little longer - which will be fine as I will now have to hang the pump off the bottom of this vertical shaft briggs. So will need some extra clearance and length to do this. On another note - the Briggs mounting holes on the engine match the width of the case frame. Everything points to this being a pretty good match. Except I don't know about RPMs at this point and how that will affect the pump drive for the tiller and the hydrostatic trans.

I own a Case 444 with a 14hp kohler. The engine blew several months ago. I wanted to replace the engine with an updated larger engine but was unable to do so.
I ended up purchasing a new short block.
Your biggest problem is none of the engine manufacturers make an engine with a shaft at both ends. One end drives the hydrostatic pump and the other drives attachments. During my search: It may be possible find an engine for the pump but to drive the attachments, I was told, you could change these to electric drive.
Most places I talked to were able to find the short block.

How much did your short block cost? I have a 444 with a bad engine too. Also, what type of place do you find a short block? Thanks

The Case 444 does not have a double shaft engine. There is a stub shaft which bolts to the flywheel. I replaced the short block on mine. I bought it from a Koehler dealer.
