Thanks for replies to my previous mnessage. I thought that since it's been a while since I posted, I'l restart the thread.

I checked and it s the 1000 Craftsman, and the engine is the Kohler single cylinder Commander, 16 hp OHV, model 460s.

As previously, the question is what commoly available replacement filter do I use? I'm posting this as more specific information hoping it will give enough for somebody to reply since at least one of the previous replies referred to the twin.

Thanks for any additional info.

Thanks all! I guess this is one of those that always gets a mix of advocates for OEM or other. Guess I'm an "other" type guy. I've heard the same for filters on the tractor boards.

I appreciate your replies.

Have to agree 100% with JP. Kohler designs, tests and builds the engine using a specific filter design specification. The other OEMS try to copy this, but they do NOT have the EXACT design of the part.

Using cheap Brand X filters will (more often than not) lead to engine problems....

Nope. All oil filters are made by one of 5-6 oil filter companies. They make them to the equipment manufacturer's specifications. Kohler DOES NOT make oil filters! They are private-branded by those companies.

So if you can get an exact cross-reference filter, go for it. In many cases, they are far better than the OEM spec; for example, I use Mobil 1 filters (made by Champion) to replace all the other OEM brands (like AC).

By saying if you can get an exact cross-referance, are you taking the filter apart and checking for paper density, square inches of paper in the filter and the same pop off pressure inside the filter or just if it fits, there are a lot of variables to deal with.

Please, you are not qualified to judge the effectiveness of a filter... cutting filters apart is 3rd grade. Paper density? Are you kidding? The best filters don't even use paper (like Mobil 1)!

The "real" engineers use SAE designed tests on test equipment that costs many thousands of $$ and run repeatable tests to ensure flow rate, pressure handling, and particle removal efficiency all meet the manufacturer's specifications. They then certify the filter and the manufacturer of the end use component buys off on the certification.

I guess Kohler, Briggs and Stratton are 3rd grade???? They cut filters all the time to show the qaulity of their filters compared to aftermarket and to show how much more filtering surface they use. What makes you think I am not qualified to judge the effectiveness of oil filters???

Kohler filters are the only way to go. I know from expereince if you have an oil related engine failure and do not have a Kohler filter, they may not honor a warranty. Most Kohler filter should be able to be bought for around 6.00 ea. Darn cheap to know you are getting a filter designed for the engine and not a filter that you do not know what the specs are.

WIX warrantees the perfotmance of their filters, and they state is is illegal under the Magnuson-Moss Warantee Act for a manufacturer to refuse to honor a warrantee because an aftermarket filter was used.

No, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty act states that you cannot refuese to honor a warranty if the original part fails and you use an aftermarket part to replace it. In this case you are warrantying the original failed part. If you use an aftermarket filter and that aftermarket filter causes the engine failure, the manufacturer does have all legal right to refuse to honor the warranty. In this case you are asking a person to warranty something they did not manufacture or have built to their Specifications. I am on your side on this filter debate thing, becasue these OEM's have their filters priced so high it is rediculous. But o me when I have a $30,000.00 truck or a 2000.00-10,000.00 lawn mower, it is not worth me saving 3-4 dollars and not knowing what is in the cheap filters. I have cut oil filter in two, paper desity of an OEM filter is denser and have more filtering capabilties that some of the cheap aftermarket filters. So you cna argue the point all day long. I value my equipment more than using a cheap filter. Their are a lot of places you can use cheaper, but oil and air filters is one place I will not do that, these 2 little parts, plus the oil you use is what makes the differance on how long my engines last. My last 2 trucks had over 200,000 miles on a 302 Ford.My 982 Cub Cadet has over 10,000 hours on it, 3rd engine, always used OEM fuel, oil, and air filters for the life of them and they lasted a long time in each case.

I may be a little funny on things, I don't use anything but O.E.M. filters on anything I have.
Considering how many times a filter is changed, I dont mind the few extra bucks.

You have several brands and price ranges to choose from.
$8+..Briggs, Kohler, Tecumpse(sp), Harley brand filters
$3 to $6..AC Delco PF 53, Fram 3614, Wal mart 3614 I was running the Harley filter on my Kohler for a while because it was cheaper than the Kohler filter. Now I run the AC Delco BB
