Ariens 931 - pto draining my battery

I see a drain on the battery when I'm running the PTO on my Ariens 931 series. Yesterday, after a long mowing session, it was dead when I went to start it again. The former owner had disconnected the seat switch and put in a jumper and I see that the manual says doing that will drain the battery (although that makes no sense to me since it would be in the on position anytime you are sitting on the tractor and the key is off when you are not on it). Any Ideas???

I figured it out - I'm posting this so others will know if they have a similar problem. It was the "regulator / rectifier" - one wire was not connected because the terminal was corroded - I just reattached it and .... presto we're charging!!!

I think the jumper is only part of the problem because everything is fine until I run the PTO. I ran it all winter without any battery drain but when I kick in the PTO to run the mower this spring, the ammeter shows a pretty big drain and it stays there until I turn the PTO off.

10-4. Still need a wiring diagram. Some of the safety loops are confusing.

To drain the battery, something has to be shorted that is not supposed to be, that you put in the circuit when in PTO position. So what is the mechanism that caused the short, and what is there to short?

Maybe you have a pinched wire somewhere (between sheet metal and frame), or a wire that a metallic lever has worn the insulation off and is touching, or the heat of the engine or tranny burned insulation off and a wire is grounding out.

Maybe time for a visual inspection while you are awaiting a diagram.

Lots of options.

Good luck,

Mark

i put a toggle switch in place of the jumper wire and it is ok now as long as u do not forget to turn it off when u turn the key off.

You need a wiring diagram.

I just bought a JD 100. It had a backup safety, and a seat pressure safety.

The backup safety was a pushbutton switch. If you wanted to back up without killing the engine you had to hold the switch down. Two wire switch, had to short it with a jumper to work.

Seat was a bit more involved. 4 wires. Traced it all out and couldn't get it to stay running when I engaged the mower. After a couple of hours, of very puzzling troubleshooting I found a little silver metal clip (embedded in the wiring harness connector) that shorted out the 2 center of the 4 terminals if the mating connector was pulled off....i.e. you disconnected the seat switch. I took a pair of long nosed pliers and pulled out that little piece of metal and now it works fine with the seat plug disconnected.

You have to understand these designers. Are they designing to help the maint man troubleshoot problems, or are they trying to outsmart you so you aren't clever enough to undo their "looking out for you". Makes a difference in whether you are looking for a open (not true) or a short (true).

I know Dixie Chopper uses a relay on their seat switches and if you unhook the seat it will still drain the battery becasue the relay stills keeps the circuit open to draw currant, so it can be true.
