1/4 keyway goes in really hard

I put a new 5 rib pulley on my Vanguard 18hp horizontal shaft motor. It came in 2 pieces. The main piece that fit on the crank was made split on one side. I cut a 2" long piece of keystock and had to file each side at one end to fit it in the slot created by the crank and hub. I had to pound it in with a hammer. It went in so hard that the top of the keystock mushroomed. The pulley itself bolted to the hub once it was on. Did I do anything wrong? Boyd.

Vangard engines ae made by Mitsubishi, they are a Japanese engine, could be Metric. Yes, you could have done a lot of damage to the engine!!!!
You could have broken the F/W side bearing plate by beating on it. Small engine work is not a game of getting a bigger hammer. You have a taper lock pully you are describing. You needed to put the key in the shaft first, then, put a chisel, screwdriver, something in the slot, open it up a little and it should have slid on with no effort what so ever.

I ran the engine today and I saw no wobble in the big pulley at all. The keyway had some oxidation on it, thats what probably made it go in hard. Are you SURE I could have damaged the engine? I stopped hammering the keyway in about 3/8" outward from the crankshaft. Everything looks good. Boyd.

If the keyways were clean and you had the right key, a gentle tap would have been all that was needed. I always lay the key in the slots to make sure it is right before I get to rough with it.
They dont like a lot of force.

Yes, you may have destroyed the engine. Rule #1 with any kind of pulleys and engines, you NEVER use a hammer or anything else to pound a pulley on or off. There are special tools and techniques for this. A service manual or the expertise of a good small engine shop might have saved you lots of $$$.
