AC or DC?

I am trying to convert an 8 HP Briggs to Electric start. I have a question about the charging system. I have a stater shaped like a half moon not the full circle. My question is how do I know if the one wire coming from it produces AC or DC current? The wire is black with a Red Connecter. I beleive there is a diode in it. Thanks for any help!
Dan

According to the Briggs manual, black wire with red connector is 1.2 amp DC stator.

Oops, The stator is actually putting out AC but at the connector the diode has converted it t 1.2 amps DC. Just hook to the + battery terminal and you are set. The diode will prevent discharge when the engine isn't running so you don't have to run it through a switch. This stator is designed to maintain a 12 amp hour battery (10% rule) BB

There is currently a wire that goes to the key switch that I beleive the old stater was connected to. Are you saying I could just bypass it and run the stater wire to the + side of battery? Would I connect it to where the + Cable from the battery connects to the Selonoid? I beleive old stater was both AC and DC power(don't have old Stater) because lawnmower has lights, but lights are not a real concern. All I want to accomplish is charging the battery. Thanks for all the help.

The wire that ran through the switch from the old stator was either AC or -DC for the lights, depending on the old system. The current stator wire can be hooked directly to the battery or to the battery side of the solenoid, whichever you prefer. BB

Anything that revolves and has a Diode is "AC"

The Diode converts AC to DC by only allowing voltage and current to travel in one direction.

you have ac on the stator side of the diode and dc on the other side of the diode..

If it is a single wire stator it should be dc,with the stator itself acting as the ground. If it is a 2 wire stator it could be either, and the only way to confirm it would be to find a number on it or put it on the motor and check it with a meter.
