BRIGGS TWIN CYLINDER CARB QUESTION

On a Briggs twin cylinder vertical shaft, if you take off the air cleaner and flip open the choke plate, you can look straight down through the carb throat, and look all the way to the bottom floor of the intake manifold. Question - with the engine shut off, you shouldn't see liquid gasoline puddling down there, right? My first thought was this was some kind of carb bowl or dash pot, but that's up inside the carb body where the float is. I removed the carb and stuck a finger down there to verify, and yep, it's liquid gas in the bottom of the intake manifold. Too rich on the settings? Needle valves gone? Time for a carb overhaul? Thanks, James

Needle and seat. Had the same problem. $13.95 for a carb overhaul kit. Should solve the problem.

you may need to clean out the carb and put in a new needle and seat as well as he float if it has gas in it. also a good time to put in the fuel pump diaphram.. lucas

Lucas, Thanks, this sounds like the way I will go. I got this beast from a guy on Ebay a couple of months ago. It ran, but it never would idle down, would go into surging and hunting if you put the throttle in anything other than full speed.

I've put maybe 15 or 20 hours on it, until this weekend while mowing when it started choking down and stalling and wouldn't keep running. I figured the marginal condition of this carb has finally given up the ghost.

I've got a carb overhaul kit for this engine, which includes new gaskets and needle valves. I've got the carb apart now, preparing to soak it for a while in some carb cleaner. I hope it comes back up and runs soon. I like working on tractors and such, but I need to get the grass mowed too! James

Unless it has an electric fuel shut off solenoid on the carb you will see alittle fuel. When it is turned off the pistons are still moving and sucking in fuel.

Chad, > Unless it has an electric fuel shut off solenoid on the carb you will see alittle fuel. When it is turned off the pistons are still moving and sucking in fuel. <

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. It does not have a solenoid, and so it would figure that a little fuel would be sucked thru the carb while the engine is spinning down. And this one does take a long time to spin down. What's the procedure to see if the carb float level is set right? James
