12V Ignition Coil Gets TOO HOT!

1966 Ford 100 Garden Tractor/Kohler 10 HP engine (K241) with Starter/Gen, Keyswitch and seperate starter button, plus voltage regulator(Delco).

After short run time, ignition coil gets too hot to touch. (Engine still runs though with normal shut-off with key) Amp gauge flutters on the positive (charge side). Have Ford Manual and have done gap adjustments on Current/Voltage Relay and Cut-Off Relay (on the bench). Unsure of setting final voltages and cut-off while tractor is running. Book is vague. Am I supposed to be checking the voltage with my hand-held volt meter? At which post on the regulator? (Batt?) Regulator may be bad afterall. Don't know. Coil is brand new. Condenser is brand new. Points are brand new. Battery is brand new.

Compared all wiring connections with book, tractor is wired correctly. Compared coil temp with a 1971 Ford 100/Kohler 10 HP (both K241s), coil gets only mildly warm on known good running tractor.

Suggestions?

THANKS for the helpful tips. I'll check out other sources for the "right" ignition coil. Hope that does it.

The correct Kohler coil is Part No: #231281 & is available from any Kohler Dealer.

Sutitable Replacements are:
Napa: 7-01643
Stens: 460048

The Stens coil is about $21.00

The Kohlers need the correct coil, with built-in resistance. The Kohler ignition system operates with more dwell than most other systems, making even a 12 Volt automotive coil with internal resistance run hotter than it should.

You can get the proper coil for a Kohler from a John Deere dealer, Deere part #AM38411, for $32.99.

i agree you need the kohler brand coil with internal resistor.. your voltage at fast speed should be 14-14.5 volts . the points go on the negative side of the coil.lucas

Do you have the correct Kohler Ignition Coil for that K241....?? Kohler coils have an internal resistor matched for the ignition systems..!!

I remember reading that. Funny thing is, the local New Holland dealer wants to charge $96 for a starter coil for the K241 while the local automotive store charges $11 for a 12 volt coil that looks identical, same markings.

What resistance value? Can it be added external to the coil? At what point? (Between which two points?)
