voltage regulator short

I have a cub cadet 106 that I am restoring.
Last week the rubber insulators on the old
voltage regulator gave way and it shorted out on the frame. I installed a used one
that was thought to work but when I turn the
key nothing happens (with either one hooked up)
When it comes to electrical systems I have no clue. Any help would be appreciated. Is there
a way to test the used VR to be sure it works?

Thanks

Mike

The rubber "insulators" are for to keep vibration from the engine from shaking up the guts of the voltage regulator. They are NOT electrical insulators, and,in fact there is a jumper wire that provides a good ground to the regulator. It must have fallen when the mounts failed, and one of the terminals must have shorted to the tractor chassis.

If I understand your post correctly, the starter is not cranking the engine over when you turn the key? If this is the case, it is NOT the voltage regulator causing the no-crank problem. It should crank over even with the voltage regulator removed altogether.

There must be a blown fuse or a bad wire that comes from the battery side of the starter solenoid an brings power to the key switch.

Here are a couple of links. One is a Wiring Diagram for the CC 106 and the other is a check out procdure for a CC charging system. This is assuming, that you have the correct V/R on your Cub.
