Hello, I have an 1983 Case 224 Hydrive tractor. It was given to me with very few hours on it. It has a 14 horse Kohler model K321AS engine. It will start and run great but then after 15-20 minutes of mowing it will only run on full or partial choke. I've checked the cooling fins/system thoroughally and can't find a prob there (it seems to run hot and vapor lock. I have several dealer repair invoices with the same complaint as mine on them( from the prior owner) with repairs such as a carb kit, new points-condensor and coil, cleaned carb, new fuel filter ect all of which never seem to solve the problem. Has anyone had a similar problem with this model/engine. This tractor is very clean I'd really like to use it in the yard. Any suggestions as to the prob. Thanks, Tom

Check the points, Kohler says to set them at .020 but you can tighten them to .015 or .016 to retard the timing a few degrees. Also, when it acts up, touch the coil to see if it is hot. Most aftermarket coils for cars will not work for long on the Kohler because of the long dwell time of the points.

It sounds like somebody has spent a fortune thowing new parts at this tractor, but did not get to the obvious. 1. Is the engine in time? If it is out of ignition timing, will run hot and could vapor lock.
2. As stated, fuel tank vent, cap or external.
3. Fuel line getting soft and collapsing.
4. Are you using pure fuel or alchohal fuel? Why? alchohal will boil at a lower point than gas, henceforth vapor lock.
5. Do you have a strong fuel supply coming from fuel pump, you could have a pump getting weak.

5.

Thank you for the input. Unfortunantly, I should have stayed up a little later last night and added
the other 2 or three invoices to my post. Looks like the former owner had this thing seafoamed, carb-cleanered to death. Also, when I got the tractor The first thing I tried was to remove the gas cap when it acted up, second thing was checking the whole fuel system. The air ducting on the engine shroud directs hot air directly onto the carb and fuel pump. I'll go through fuel system again but was just curious If possibly this particular engine set up had vapor lock issues due to the ducting. Thank you all for your info!!

Amazing how service people ignore the obvious. Of course, how much could they charge you to clean the vent in the gas cap?

$2 for a can of carb/choke cleaner or $5 for a new cap will solve your problem.

Fuel cap vent could be closed or something is closing gas line.Had one with a piece string in gas tank, would run O.K.until string would get in gas outlet than it would start to slow down and quit unless choke used.Had time finding problem.Good Luck

Air hole in the gas cap?
